Playback as an organisation evolved in September 1998 from two consultation events with disabled children and young people. The consultation events were organised by two parents of children with disabilities, and were designed as leisure and play events to encourage children and young people to have fun, and talk about their lives: what mattered to them, what they wanted to do, and what the barriers were?

The consultation was filmed and produced a DVD called ‘Looking through Disability’ (see our history for further information)

The children who took part in the original event expressed a wish to continue the activities and to meet with others socially and to make use of community based services, as social and recreational opportunities for young people with disabilities can be extremely limited in many areas.
The activities continued through the dedication and support of a group of committed volunteers, and in June 2001, the organisation gained charitable status – The Playback Trust.
The majority of the young people who took part in the original consultations are still active members of Playback Trust.

From 2004-2007 Playback Trust’s core activities and events were supported by BBC Children and Need Funding .

At present BIG Lottery Funding funds the Trust’s core activity programme.
